What to Expect During Tooth Extractions

While preserving your natural tooth is typically preferred, there are situations where your dentist may advise extracting one or more teeth to safeguard your overall health. Various reasons may necessitate tooth extraction. One common example is wisdom teeth removal, which can prevent crowding and reduce the risk of inflammation or infection if they do not fully emerge. Additionally, extractions may be recommended for impacted teeth, dysfunctional teeth that are difficult to clean, severe gum disease, or teeth causing damage or decay to adjacent teeth.

Procedure

Tooth extractions are typically straightforward procedures that are completed quickly. Before extracting the tooth, your dentist will take x-rays to assess the situation. The area around the tooth will be numbed, and you may receive oral sedation to ease any anxiety. During the extraction, you may feel some pressure but should not experience pain. Our experienced dentists will meticulously clean the socket to remove any remaining infected tissue. If advised, they may perform socket preservation by placing bone graft material and a protective membrane to maintain bone levels and prevent the development of a dry socket, which can be painful. If you have a history of dry sockets, please inform our team so they can take preventive measures. Antibiotics may be prescribed depending on your individual case, and appropriate pain relief medications will be recommended or provided.
